Year of the wood snake

A year for renewal and a year for positivity

Last year I got interested in Chinese new year’s. Since it was the birthyear of my daughter I was curious what her Chinese birth sign would be. I was very happy to learn she would be a dragon like my mother. I then found this wonderful blog of a Chinese cultural professor explaining all the details and dos and don’ts of the year of the dragon. What colors to wear what taboos to avoid. And even though I’m not really superstitious I do believe that adding a little bit of these rituals might actually stimulate hope and positivity. And that’s what Verloren Kompas is all about! The year of the dragon was a great year to start a business. Which made me very happy because it was the year, I would start my own. And yellow and gold are the colors for financial fortune. This is why I bought my “golden” shoes.

Now the year of the wood dragon came to an end and yesterday the year of the wood snake officially kicked off. I returned to the blog I had read last year and I was happy to find a new entry about this year. My golden shoes were good for another year and this was the year of renewal. Taking this positive energy, I decided to take steps and add more content to my life, so to speak. After nearly a year’s hesitation. Looking back on this site of a theatre group in Lelystad I finally took the plunge and signed up. It didn’t take long for them to respond. In a straightforward if somewhat confusing mail.

After reading the e-mail I wasn’t quite certain what time I was supposed to arrive but I followed my gut. Well, to be fair I followed my nose, after the birth of my daughter my gut isn’t sticking out as much in. front anymore and my nose is once again the front runner. Anyway, I got that there thinking there wouldn’t be any early rehearsal and despite my gut no longer being the first thing of mine to enter the doorway it was right about this. It was the warmest of welcomes. An instant rapport with the players starting the jokes as I went in the door. And I came in quite confident if I say so myself. I was shown the whole building and got a small part in the upcoming play. After walking in it no longer seemed possible not to join. And now it seems I have.

It was a good start of the year of the snake for me. I feel positive about it and I hope there will be even more positivity in the coming months.

Drawing

I started drawing a snake and then for some reason instead of shedding its skin it's shedding it's sock. Trying to hold on to the meaning of the year of the snake, which is renewal yet giving it a more playful note. I kept the original colours for a change otherwise the drawing would lose it's spirit. And I found no workaround.

Chinese symbols

When I was researching the year of the snake I came across these symbols. (I hope I got it right. Please leave me a comment on Facebook if I'm wrong) The one in the lantern says WoodFire because somehow it's not only the year of the wood snake but the wood/fire snake? And the one below says snake.
