Year of the fire horse

A year for risks and adventure

19th of February 2025

The new lunar year has rung in and we’ve entered the year of the fire horse. It is becoming part of my own little ritual to read up on the taboos and recommendations of each lunar year. On the 17th of February 2026 many asian countries celebrate the beginning of a new lunar year, also commonly referred to as Chinese New Year. Every year when this event approaches I try to read up on it and get a hang of the predictions of the zodiac sign.

This is a superstition I believe helps me stay grounded and positive (Ironically enough). Although I don’t truly believe in the power of the stars and astrology I do believe in the power of positive thinking and energy. Trying to create an environment where my creativity and work can flourish, where I can grow and stay in the right mindset to work towards my goals. I believe this is essential and can be cultivated through small tokens and trinkets to motivate me and stay optimistic. Staying in the right mindset can be difficult when the evening news talks about a world that sometimes seems too far gone to save. Especially these days it’s important to stay focussed on our goals and create a better, brighter tomorrow. I know it sounds cliché, yet it is what drives me to keep going. And remember: not all steps have to be leaps forward. Following the zodiac signs and their advices helps me towards this goal.

And staying informed about these things is not just good as a psychological pick me up. The Lunar new year has a big influence on fashion, home decorating and even finance. In the global economy in which we find ourselves we influence each other with our cultures and believes. This is true for such a huge event as the lunar new year as well. Colours and fabric choices in fashion even wether or not we want to be noticed or need to feel a little more camouflaged with our style are linked to it either being a good year to take professional risks or a good year to save money and focus on our personal growth. In home decorating we should ask ourselves if there will be more demand for wood or metal, modern or classical design and if we want to face north or east. And in finance we are faced with the question wether this is the year to start a new investment or play it save. And as I said in a global economy these choices have an enormous ripple effect.

Now just a quick summary of what I’ve learned so far about this following Lunar year. As I said it is the year of the fire horse which makes it a year full of energy. Red is a very dominant color this year. People born in this year are fiery as well as enthusiastic and social. It is a good year for risks and change. What are YOU waiting for? Enjoy this interesting year and leave me a comment on one of my social media pages on your thoughts. Happy new year!

Drawing

When I grabbed a paper I just knew how I wanted the horse to look with the fiery manes and the ashblack body. It's less dark than I had previously intended but as no line was erased in this work, I'm quite please with the result. I kept the colour as I did in the year of the wood snake because it felt like it would otherwise lose its heart.

Chinese symbols

Since it is a continuation of the snake of last year I felt it appropriate to add the chinese symbols. Also this year I learnt that it is more correctly reffered to as Lunar new year than chinese new year as it is celebrated not just in china but many other asian countries, I have changed it in this years text. We live and learn.
